Elementary

“Mrs. Leaptrott makes me feel special by saying, ‘You are very smart and wise.’ So I try my best to be like that all the time.”
—Nandi Davis, 3rd grade
WCA’s elementary school gives children a chance to learn about the world, discover and build on interests and talents, and develop a relationship with God.
In the WCA elementary department, we believe in:
• Challenging while supporting
• Loving guidance and encouragement
• Being developmentally appropriate
• Working with parents as a team
• Meeting the individual needs of our students
All students in K-5th grade take the following enrichment classes:
• P.E. (Two 30-minute classes per week)
• Art (45 minutes per week)
• Library (30 minutes per week)
• Computer (45 minutes per week)
• Science exploration (30 minutes per week)
• Choral music (45 minutes per week)
Elementary students also benefit from:
• Strings — Students may enter our excellent strings program in the second grade. It meets twice per week for 45 minutes each.
• History — The Story of the World program grabs students’ attention from the very first lesson. It is a story-based curriculum, beginning in ancient China and ending in modern times, with many exciting hands-on activities. History is a non-graded subject that presents a wonderful overview of the world’s past.
• Math — The Saxon Math curriculum is used throughout WCA because it incorporates hands-on activities that present the abstract concepts of math in a concrete and visible way. It also reviews past material so that the information stays available and usable in our students’ brains. Advanced math classes are available for students in 4th and 5th grade who qualify.
• Chapel — Students attend a weekly chapel based on their age, and are offered the opportunity to participate in active praise and worship singing times daily.
• “Character First” Program — Recognition is given to students who exhibit a certain positive character trait emphasized each month.
