Make plans to be at WCA on Thursday evening, February 16! Our basketball teams will be playing their last regular season home basketball games versus Metro Conference opponent Denbigh Baptist. JV boys play at 4:00 p.m., girls varsity at 5:30, and boys varsity at 7:00 p.m. We will honor our seniors on the girls and boys varsity teams, as this will be their last regular season home game as WCA Eagle basketball players.

In addition, we will have a brief ceremony between the girls varsity and boys varsity games (at approximately 6:30 p.m.) when we will honor the memory of Katie Mausteller, who went to be with Jesus on Oct. 10, 2011. Katie graduated from WCA in 2008 and was a 4-year varsity Lady Eagle in soccer and basketball. She was an outstanding competitor in both sports with many accolades, and she helped put WCA Athletics on the map in our community and in the state. We will be retiring Katie’s basketball and soccer jerseys during this ceremony, in remembrance of an incredible young lady that touched many lives in her short time here on earth. Please plan to attend to commemorate a life well-lived by a WCA alumna.

WCA’s kindergarten through 2nd grade classes will also be having their class spirit night and tailgate party.

Hope to see you Thursday for a special night at WCA.

Coach Gann had this to say about standout Duncan: “Jake has developed into a leader in our program. Scoring 1,000 points is a great honor. Jake is a total team player that has a lot of great basketball ahead of him.” Duncan is averaging 18.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Students from preschool through 12th grade will gather at Williamsburg Christian Academy on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 9:15 a.m. for a school-wide assembly to recognize Black History Month. A variety of performances and presentations by students and staff, as well as guest storyteller James Cameron, will highlight African-American history, culture, and achievements.

Several elementary students will stage a silent soda-shop/lunch counter “sit-in” scene throughout the assembly. Shirley Timmer’s 7th grade class will present an African style call-and-response sermon written by Tony Campolo, entitled ”Hold On, Sunday is Coming.” Scholars believe that this style of call-and-response poem springs from various African oral traditions.

The 5th grade and kindergarten classes have constructed quilt blocks for a unity-themed quilt, sewn by 5th grade teacher Terri Kolekofski. The quilt will be displayed during the assembly. Fifth grade will also recite part of Martin Luther King’s ”I Have a Dream” speech, and kindergarten will sing a Martin Luther King song.

Jane Vaught, Head of Elementary School, will lead the elementary students in singing two familiar songs, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “This Little Light of Mine,” which had their start as spirituals sung by American slaves.

Anthony Petriccione’s environmental science class will come forward to introduce a map of Africa that they made during a demographics study, which will be displayed throughout the assembly.

Guest storyteller James Cameron will also perform in costume. Mr. Cameron has over 12 years of radio broadcasting experience, and has worked as a storyteller for Colonial Williamsburg and an interpreter for the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. He has served as a consultant and historical “talking head” for movie productions, and has performed and lectured in various educational, touring and speaking programs throughout the country. His speaking credits include: The National Archives, The Library of Congress, World Bank, The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Library, Howard University, Salisbury University, Thomas Nelson Community College, Wor-Wic Community College, and Tidewater Community College. The historical actor has often appeared across the U.S. as John Rollison (1723-1780), a free man of color who became one of the richest men in all of Virginia. Mr. Cameron has spent over 3,000 hours researching Mr. Rollison’s life and times.

Parents and grandparents are invited and encouraged to attend the event at WCA on Wednesday.

Williamsburg Christian Academy is a community-based, interdenominational Christian school (preschool through 12th grade) working in partnership with Christian families to provide students with a Christ-centered, college preparatory education so that God’s purposes can be fulfilled in them, both personally and vocationally.

New Director of Preschool, 3-year-old Program,
& Bus Route to Rural Areas Are Among 2012-2013 Changes

Among Williamsburg Christian Academy’s plans for the 2012-2013 school year are several new items of interest, including a new preschool program and director, as well as a morning school bus route to New Kent County, the school announced yesterday.

Preschool Program Revamped
WCA has recently hired Michelle Flanagan to serve as its new Director of Preschool, replacing current Director Jean Jurasek, and will now add a 3-year-old program to its current program for 4-year-olds. “Mrs. Jurasek has led an amazing preschool program that has been efficiently administered and graciously taught,” said Head of School Gwen Martin. “Her commitment to the Lord and capable leadership of the little ones has been outstanding.”

Michelle Flanagan holds a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Towson University, as well as a M.S. in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and possesses 8 years of teaching experience. She has been actively involved in ministries at Williamsburg Community Chapel and Providence Classical School. In her new role at WCA, she will be teaching the 4-year-old class as well as developing additional programs for early learners and serving in an administrative capacity.

“As a lover of learning and children, I am thrilled to serve as the new director of the WCA Eagle Preschool and teacher of the 4′s program,” said Flanagan. “I am equally excited to announce the addition of our 3-year-old program. Our preschool is designed to be thematic, experiential and will prepare each child for kindergarten and beyond.”

Head of School Gwen Martin said, “Mrs. Flanagan’s love for the Lord and training in early childhood education make her a wonderful provision for leading our preschool program into the future. ” Mrs. Flanagan currently teaches sixth grade science at WCA.

In 2012-13, WCA’s newly named “Eagle Preschool” will encompass part-time and full-time programs for 3- and 4-year-olds. With an emphasis on celebrating the whole child, this Christ-centered program will encourage students to explore, grow, learn and play. Parents can choose a three, four or five day per week schedule, with full and half day options.

School Bus Route Offered to Students in New Kent and Surrounding Areas
WCA’s buses are currently only used for athletic events and field trips, as students are generally driven individually by parents to and from the school, located in upper James City County off of Rochambeau Drive. However, that too will change in 2012-2013, as plans are in the works to offer a morning bus ride to school for students who live in New Kent County and other distant areas. The bus will pick up students at a central location. This service, available for a fee to cover the cost of operation, is being designed to provide convenience and ease for families who live farther away from the school than most. “We don’t want the commute to be a deterring factor for families in neighboring rural areas who are seeking a private, Christian education for their children,” said Head of School Gwen Martin.

Open enrollment at WCA began February 1. Please call (757) 220-1978 or see WilliamsburgChristian.org for more information.

Williamsburg Christian Academy is a community-based, interdenominational Christian school (preschool through 12th grade) working in partnership with Christian families to provide students with a Christ-centered, college preparatory education so that God’s purposes can be fulfilled in them, both personally and vocationally.

Come to our Open House to learn more: Wednesday, January 25, 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., at Williamsburg Christian Academy, 101 Schoolhouse Lane, Williamsburg, Va. 23188.

This is your chance to discover why students and parents alike love Williamsburg Christian Academy. Get an up-close look at how we’re transforming lives, not just building transcripts. From preschool through 12th grade, our students grow intellectually and spiritually in a nurturing, Christ-centered environment where individual needs are met, gifts are developed, and lifelong learning begins.

Enrollment for the 2012-13 school year begins soon! Call us at (757) 220-1978 for more information. Ask about our new 3-year-old preschool program!
